The lighter side of Convention '10
There's plenty of ag issues and profit oriented workshops at convention this year, But don't forget about the fun too.
If you didn't get a chance to visit the Amana Colonies during last year's convention, make a special effort this year. Just 20 miles east from Coralville, the Amana's offer the best of the German heritage of colonial America. An entire colony of local artists produce craftwork and contemporary-designed items.
The Amanas are divided into seven separate colonies, offering collectible items that are both high quality and often hand-made. It might be the fine furniture, old-world clocks, affordable antiques, arts and crafts or the Amana textiles that catch your fancy.
And you can get your cuisine on in numerous restaurants offering award-winning German fare in the Amanas.
Downtown Iowa City, home of the Old Capitol Cultural District (OCCD), is the ideal location to dazzle your senses. Relish the robust flavors of the District's restaurant array, take in fine artistry in galleries and museums, find the unusual in shops and boutiques, or experience the energy of live performers. You can do it all in one convenient location.
Located along the west bank of the Iowa River, the Museum of Art is a major element among the cultural resources of eastern Iowa. The museum's permanent collection totals more than 9,000 paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, photographs, and decorative art.
Another popular destination is Tanger Outlets, located in Williamsburg, Iowa. More than 55 brand name designer outlet stores are featured right beside Interstate 80, just 25 miles away from Coralville.
And, for quilt lovers, Kalona, Iowa's Quilt & Textile Museum houses nearly 200 fine examples of Americana.
